Mobile phones, Smartphones and cell phones are names sometimes used interchangeably. However, are they the same? Strictly speaking the answer is no!

Smartphones, in addition to sending and receiving text messages and allowing normal voice communications, can also send files (including emails and digital photos) as well as access the internet. Most smartphones also include camera technology, voice recognition and personal information management (PIM’s) systems.

What does “unlocked” mean?

The term “unlocked” (when used in the mobile phone industry) refers to a phone that is not bound to a singular carrier. The term “locked” indicates that the carrier has imposed restrictions on the use of the phone on another network.

What is GSM?

GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communications. It is an international standard for digital cellular mobile phone devices and allows mobile phones to communicate across international boundaries. It is the most popular worldwide standard for mobile phone devices and allows the highest vocal quality and the best level of connection between different networks.

What are bands?

A cellular phone’s band is the frequency on which it operates in megahertz. A “Dual Band” cellular phone operates on frequencies: 900/1800 (Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, New Zealand, Australia). A “Tri-Band” cellular phone operates on frequencies: 900/1800/1900 (Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Australia, New Zealand). A “Quad Band” cellular phone operates on frequencies: 850/900/1800/1900 (Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Australia, New Zealand). Most “Quad Band” phones will work and provide their features worldwide. Looking at the frequencies listed above one can see there is no purpose buying a “Dual Band” cellular phone and travelling to the United States! For practical purpose, travellers to different worldwide locations should consider purchasing a “Quad Band” cellular phone!

What is Sims?

Your “Sim Card” is the chip that is provided by your chosen network which allows you to connect your cellular phone to that network. All mobile phones require a Sim Card for such a connection. Some cellular phones now have the capacity to hold two (2) Sim Cards. Each Sim Card has a separate and different telephone number assigned to it. With “Dual Sim Card Phones” you can have two different telephone numbers within the same mobile phone.
